Our facilities are enjoyed by a range of customers including The German Saturday School Leicester who first started hosting their classes at Countesthorpe Academy in 2012. Since then the School has grown to nearly 150 students with more than 20 teachers.
“We run every other Saturday and provide active and fun German sessions for all ages and abilities. We also run a one or two week summer school each year and many special events, as well as official Telc German exams throughout the year.
“We love the bright big rooms we can use for our language classes at Countesthorpe which are equipped with interactive whiteboards and speaker system. There is a big kitchen as well we sometimes use for our active lessons – especially before Christmas for all the traditional treats we love to bake. We run a German Christmas market at the Countesthorpe Academy each December, a big Carnival in February, an Easter egg hunt in the surrounding park, and a German summer fair in July for all our 150 students!
“The facilities are great, reasonably priced and flexible with bookings, and there is always someone on standby ready to help should there be any problems. We have been at the location for nearly 14 years now with the German Saturday School Leicester, and have been able to attract families from as far as Manchester and Northampton due to the very fast access to the M1.”

On Saturday 7 March this year the Countesthorpe Festival Chorus (CFC) met at Countesthorpe Academy to celebrate 25 years of singing together.
The chorus first began in 2000, under the musical direction of Giles Turner, who was then Head of Music at Countesthorpe College. Its first performance was of “Carmina Burana” with assistance from Willard Welsford and with John Fletcher on piano. It met weekly throughout the summer, culminating in a concert performance in September. The chorus went through a difficult spell during Covid and initially had to return at a different venue in Leicester City. Participants overwhelmingly wanted to return to Countesthorpe, which happily we were able to do. It was revived by a small number of devoted members, emerging in a new format, organising ‘Come and Sing’ days, with no formal public performance at the end. It became a day to focus purely on the music and the joy of singing together. Recent such days have attracted over 50 singers each time.
For the 25th Anniversary the chorus returned to “Carmina Burana”, reprising its initial concert, and were pleased to be joined by a small percussion band led by Kieran O’Riordan, who teaches percussion at Countesthorpe Academy. We very much value the support we have found at Countesthorpe Academy and the inclusion of access to the coffee bar is an added bonus.
Thanks are due to the staff, who are not fazed by having such a large contingent of customers at the morning break, and also to the caretaking staff for their help on the day. The Anniversary attracted many old friends who enjoyed the displays of memorabilia as well as singing together.
CFC is proud to maintain its commitment to be open to all, whatever level of musical experience, free of charge. It is run completely on donations and the occasional grant and its sole purpose is to share together the joy of communal singing and to learn and improve under the guidance of a well-known local choir master.
Another ‘Come and Sing’ day is being organised for the Autumn. Find us at https://www.countfestchorus.
